13 years at the top of the global interchangeable lens digital camera market

Canon Inc. announces its 13th year at number one in the interchangeable-lens digital camera market, spanning both DSLR and compact system devices (based on a Canon survey).

In 2003, Canon broke new ground with the introduction of the EOS 300D. Combining a competitive price with a compact, lightweight design, this pioneering camera captured the top global market share upon release, leading the way for Canon’s dominance in DSLR.

Four free photo apps available

Canon has released four free iOS applications in the UK and Ireland.

BestShutter is designed to help take photos of children and pets who usually don't pay attention to the camera. The app uses fun sounds to capture children or pet's attention. A function to remove ads can be purchased for GBP 0.79 / Ireland: EUR 0.99).

Photo Log Map is designed to meets the needs of people who want to record location information together with shooting records during various situations such as traveling or mountain climbing. Using data from your images and a smartphones information service, it creates a shooting record maps. Even with data from photos shot on digital cameras not equipped with GPS, you can create a shooting record map linked to the smartphones GPS log. In addition to photos on the map, you can also add text memos and sound memos that record the location's conditions. By writing the recorded log to a GPX file (optional addition function GBP 0.79 /Ireland:EUR 0.99), you can use the information in other apps.

TakeMyPic is a helpful app that lets you compose your shot before giving to someone else to take. The app lets you insert a human shape in your desire position, making it easier to show the person taking your photo how you would like the shot to look.

Easy Photo Sorter makes it possible to organise photo data on your smartphone. By combining information such as date, time and day of the week, and setting your desired criteria to organise, you can create folders in your iPhone or iPad photo albums and automatically categorise photos based on this criteria when the app launches.

These apps are now available for iPhone and iPad users in the UK and Ireland from the App Store.

Updates to Canon software

Canon has released updates for some of its software to provide support for its latest cameras, including the EOS-1D X Mark II, 80D and 1300D. The latest versions are:
•  Digital Photo Professional 4.4.30
•  EOS Utility 3.4.30
•  Picture Style Editor 1.16.30

To download the updates for Windows or Mac OS X go to www.canon.co.uk/support, enter your camera model and select the 'Software' tab. Check that the updates are suitable for your computer and operating system configuration.

New entry level DSLR unveiled: EOS 1300D



Canon unveils a new entry-level EOS DSLR – the EOS 1300D. An ideal introduction to DSLR photography, the EOS 1300D includes Wi-Fi and Dynamic NFC to make sharing simpler than ever, alongside a range of improved features to help you take impressive, creative photos and movies. With an 18 megapixel sensor and responsive handling, the EOS 1300D is the perfect camera for capturing images with a distinct look and feel that are immediately shareable.

Capture quality in every shot

For photographs that stand out from the crowd, the EOS 1300D includes Canon’s DIGIC 4+ processor and a large APS-C sized, 18 megapixel sensor, letting you capture intricate detail and the diversity of colour in every scene. If you want to shoot scenes where people and items pop from blurred background, the EOS 1300D’s shallow depth-of-field capabilities deliver just that. From close-up nature shots, portraits and full cityscapes, the camera helps you create original photographs you’ll want to share, wherever you find yourself. Learn, grow and take control

DSLR photography can be daunting for beginners, but with the EOS 1300D even first timers can take stunning quality photos straight out of the box. Scene Intelligent Mode puts the camera in full control and chooses the right setting for you – or with a twist of the mode dial you can opt for a shooting mode designed for specific subjects, such as the new Food mode. Responsive Auto Focus through the viewfinder ensures even moving subjects remain in focus, helping you shoot action scenes at three frames per second. For fun, unique creations you can also apply a series of Creative filters, such as Toy camera and Fish-eye.

As your photography skills progress you can take advantage of semi-automatic or full manual control modes. With the ability to choose your own creative settings, from aperture, shutter speed and ISO between 100 and 6,400 – which is expandable to ISO 12,800, the camera gives you the freedom to learn and shoot your favourite moments even as the light fades.

For professional-looking footage, you can capture every detail in Full HD quality, thanks to the large sensor, and shoot with a shallow depth of field to add a cinematic flare to your home and holiday movies. The camera offers the same manual control in movie mode as in stills. EOS 1300D with NFC connectivity 
The EOS 1300D includes NFC and a host of new Wi-Fi connectivity features to help you store and share your photos on the go. Using NFC you can simply tap to connect to compatible Android smart devices and transfer your photos, or shoot remotely using Canon’s Camera Connect App. Ensuring all of your precious memories are stored safely is a must – with built-in Wi-Fi you can upload directly from your camera¹ to a range of cloud services, including irista from Canon, and create online galleries ready for sharing with loved ones. You can also connect the EOS 1300D to a Canon Connect Station CS100 for simple photo storage and sharing options.

New dedicated app for Connect Station CS100

Canon has announced that it will launch a dedicated companion smartphone app for its Connect Station
CS100, available on iOS and Android, at the end of March 2016. The Connect Station CS100 Smartphone App will allow you to upload images to, and download from, your smartphone or tablet; browse and select images to view on your TV screen, as well as rename albums and add comments.

To complement this, Canon also announced the release of an automatic firmware update for the Connect Station CS100, available from late May, which will deliver enhanced levels of control and even easier access to your image library.

The Firmware 2.0 update will add the following functionalities to the Connect Station CS100:
  • Quick, bulk, uploads – import bulk images from your PC to the Connect Station CS100 using the new, simple drag and drop interface
  • Easy image exports – transfer your Connect Station CS100 images to a wider range of devices
  • New Connect Station App features – the firmware will also add a feed of all your images stored on the Connect Station CS100 and is viewable on your smartphone and tablet. You will also have the ability to search by date and album name
  • Support for 13 new languages – Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Polish, Hungarian, Ukraine, Turkish, Malay, Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian

The Connect Station CS100 is a unique image-storage device that helps you bring your photos and movies together. Acting as a hub for your images and videos, you can import via NFC, the new mobile app, as well as USB, SD and CF cards. Once stored, you can relive your special moments back on your home TV, or wirelessly on your smartphone, tablet or PC, and even share images online for friends and family to view.
