EOS 50D and EF-S 18-200mm lens

Just 12 months after the EOS 40D, Canon has launched the EOS 50D.

There is a 50% increase in resolution, from 10.1 to 15.10 megapixels. The maximum burst in continuous shooting has increased from 75 to 90 JPEGS. The maximum ISO setting is now 12800, rather than 3200.

New features include a HDMI connection for high quality viewing and playback on high definition televisions, plus Face Detection Live AF.

Also new is the Creative Auto shooting mode. This goes a step beyond Full Auto (Green Square) mode, allowing users to make adjustments before shooting while still in automatic mode. More >>

Launched at the same time is the EF-S 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS lens, compatible with the EOS 50D and other models with the EF-S mount. It has a 4-stop image stabilizer to help reduce the effects of camera shake at the telephoto end of its 11x zoom range. More >>

More EOS firmware updates

Canon released a number of firmware updates in March 2024, as follows: EOS R3 – version 1.7.1 1. Enables servo zooming to be remotely controlled from EOS Utility or Camera Connect when Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E2/PZ-E2B is attached to a compatible lens. 2. Enables up to 2 TB to be used on CFexpress cards larger than 2 TB. 3. Fixes an issue that may cause the camera, in rare instances, to stop functioning when using GPS. 4. Fixes an issue that may display Error Code 70 when performing anti-flicker shooting at a shutter speed of 1 second or higher. 5. Enhances security for FTPS (File Transfer Protocol Security) connections. 6. Fixes an issue in which Mobile File Transfer may not function when connecting the camera to an iPhone compatible with USB 3.0 and higher. 7. Fixes an issue that, under specific circumstances, may prevent the image from being displayed in the viewfinder or on the screen causing the camera to stop operating, or Error Code 70 may be displayed. 8. Firmware updates have been introduced for five Canon EOS cameras. EOS-1D X Mark III: firmware version 1.8.0 1. Adds the ability to register the focus position in the preset functions of the CR-A100 Camera Remote Application. When used with the Robotic Camera System CR-S700R, it helps the user to focus on the intended subject distance when shooting. 2.
